Generating electricity, usually with solar panels, for use in the same home or building, individually or shared among several consumers.
Regulated by Real Decreto 244/2019, which allows collective self-consumption: one installation, such as panels on an apartment building's roof, can supply several owners under a sharing agreement. Surplus energy can be offset against the bill under the simplified compensation scheme.
Since Real Decreto 450/2022, new buildings over 1,000 m² built, residential included, must generate a minimum of renewable electricity under the building code. Ask whether the panels serve only communal areas or each owner.
